Temper, Temperance
Downtown Cocktail Room gives liquor-less libations a fighting chance

This summer, let's party like it's December 5, 1933. Or not—it’s your choice! When Downtown Cocktail Room bar manager George Sproule included a “Temperance” menu in his spring and summer drink lists, nestled slyly between the timeless classics and the newly re-legalized absinthe-based cocktails, he had no idea his assemblage of three teetotaling, spiritless cocktails would fly the way they did. But if prohibition isn’t really on your itinerary for the night (as it is rarely on ours), Sproule wisely suggests a suitable spirit to give the namby-pamby drink some spine.

The Sunshine, for example, combines lemon juice, lime juice, sugar, cream and Sprite for a sunny, refreshing libation for only $5. But, Sproule adds, “Try it with gin!” His Pineapple Mint Spritzer is a gas, with pineapple juice, fresh mint, Sonoma White Ginger Syrup and soda water. But, entreats Sproule, “Try it with rum!” And along much the same lines, the aptly named 18th Amendment pairs orange and cranberry juices with lemon and pomegranate syrup, served up. But, Sproule implores, “Try it with vodka!” Then, for a mere $4 upgrade, you can kiss temperance goodbye. They don’t call it a speakeasy for nothing. “I want no excuses to not have a cocktail,” says Sproule.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
The latest in from the construction front lines

Get a pen. You might just want to jot this down.

Christian Audigier The Nightclub - Now open at T.I. House of Audigier Sunday industry night to begin soon.

Wasted Space - In soft opening now, with private parties up the wazoo, the Hard Rock's new live music venue/nightclub arrives officially July 16.

Lavo - The newest creation from the Tao/Strategic Group folks, was confirmed by two high-level insiders this week to be on track for an early August soft opening with a grand opening slated for the week before Labor Day. The Ultra Lounge at Dal Toro and Lamborghini - Winning the award for the longest name in Vegas nightlife, The Ultra Lounge at yada yada soft opens August 6, with a grand opening on or around August 16.

Rok Vegas - Of NY and Miami’s brand Rok Bar and of which there have been more false alarms than we’d care to recall, Rok Vegas will finally be arriving at New York-New York on or about August 21 in Rita Rudner’s former theater space. We’re not holding our breath, but we’re saving the date and selecting an outfit nonetheless.

6.18.08 - Up on the roof

AIN'T TOO COOL FOR POOL
The Pool at Palms Place is all wet...thank goodness!

"Picture a backyard pool party with all your friends." That's how Jon Gray—assistant to Palms president George Maloof—sees his new Tuesday evening pool party panning out. Driving around this sweltering dust bowl of a valley one night around 8 p.m. Gray thought, "What else could I be doing at this time of night?!" Other than restaurants, the answer is really not much—the clubs and lounges don't open for hours and the daytime pool parties have packed up for the night. That's how Gray and a keen Maloof came up with the idea for the hip soiree.

The evening begins in the lounge at Simon restaurant at Palms Place with happy hour cocktails from 6-8 p.m., then moves outside to the pool deck from 8-12 a.m. Swimming is encouraged as is enjoying the sounds of resident DJ 88 and a healthy rotation of guest DJs such as Adam 12 (She Wants Revenge), who spun on opening night. Samantha Ronson is on deck this Tuesday, July 8 and Chris Clouse will perform live on July 15.

So what of the typical Vegas nightclub snobbery? Out the window, says Gray of his no-cover shindig. Plus, if you noticed that the ad for the event looks a little… homemade, that’s because it’s George Maloof’s own handwriting on a scrap of paper. "We're not taking ourselves too seriously," says Gray of the cutesy campaign. Oh, good. Cannonball, anyone?!

For the low-down on the night (it was just ducky!), check out my column in the July 3, 2008 issue of the Las Vegas Weekly here.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAT
Beauty and popularity reign supreme, at least for the next few weeks

It’s about time someone tells it like is. Ironic though that that someone should be a prominent Las Vegas nightlife company. Whatever the reason for the sudden bout of honesty, Light Group is coming clean about our perception of beauty—“It’s what’s outside that counts.” Bad news for many of us but for some—especially those who bear a striking resemblance to a Barbie doll—this can be very profitable news. Beginning Monday, June 23, specially chosen ladies of the blonde bombshell persuasion will face off in the first annual Vegas Blondeshell Awards at Jet’s industry night. On Monday, July 7, one lucky lady will drive off in a custom pink convertible.

But while the Blondeshell awards will take three weeks to yield its winner, here’s a little instant gratification: The Bare Rally, a good ‘ol fashioned popularity contest. It’s like high school, only drunker. Voting begins this Thursday, June 19 at LightGroup.com/BareRally for the most popular of 12 charismatic nightlife figures and closes the evening of Wednesday, June 25. The next day, whoever has the most votes and brings the biggest entourage to Bare pool lounge at the Mirage (pictured above) wins a three-day cruise on a fully-stocked yacht on Lake Mead with 11 of their best new friends. Needless to say, if your itinerary includes Bare that day, you might want to arrive a little early to beat the stampede.

A HARDY WELCOME
Christian Audigier poised to attack his next project--Vegas!

It's all in the timing. Sushisamba may not have opened this week as planned but that’s not the only project that’s got us salivating, chomping at the bit for a good old fashioned grand opening. Hell, at this point we’ll even take a soft opening! Though it was slated to begin slinging high-end sushi and Robata this Thursday in the Palazzon Shoppes, (and subsequently bring the highly anticipated Sugarcane Ultralounge with it one week later), Sushisamba’s opening has been pushed back indefinitely while crews put the finishing touches on the intricate signature ribbons that will weave throughout the space.

We won’t have to wait long, though, as Christian Audigier (the culprit behind the Ed Hardy trucker hat phenomenon) will debut his club (a partnership between Pure Management Group, TI and Audigier) where Tangerine once ruled. Says a humble Audigier, “I feel like I can do anything and this is just another facet of who I am. I have so much to offer this world from what you wear to how you relax, party and enjoy life. This will be an extension of how I do it and everyone will be able to do it with me. Let’s party!” The ego lands on July 4.

5.27.08 - Taking the burn out of pool parties

PALE IS THE NEW BLACK
The Circuit takes skin cancer awareness on the road Thursday, 5/29 at Bare Pool Lounge and Friday, 5/30 at Tao Beach in honor of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month

"Like everything else you think, 'It can't happen to me, not at 25 years old.' You think, 'I can't have skin cancer.' And I did." Blonde-haired and blue-eyed Raw Vegas TV entertainment reporter Denise Pernula was the picture of tan, toned, sun-kissed perfection when her trouble started.

"I was doing a lot of swimsuit modeling so I was in the tanning beds and in the sun a lot." At 25 she noticed a round, cigarette-like burn on her abdomen. A general physician diagnosed it as eczema, a common skin condition, and treated it with cortisone. It seemed harmless enough. A second physician, also taking it for eczema, treated Denise with a laser. But nothing worked. She Photoshopped it from every modeling shot and forgot about it. After all, it was only a small spot of eczema!

Then, a few years later, she went to a dermatologist who took a biopsy and finally dropped the bomb. Denise had Basal Cell Carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. Though slow-spreading, is its also destructive and disfiguring. Today, and ever since her surgery, Denise has a scar to show for what she went through as well as the bills and the memory. "It was kind of traumatic," she admits.

"I think people think that being tan looks healthy. It's pretty but, especially when you're out in that sun a lot, you really have to protect yourself! It's not just skin cancer, it's wrinkles, sun spots... [Donning sunscreen] is like flossing: it's a pain in the ass, it's a chore, but 20 to 30 years from now you'll be thanking yourself!"

A classic beauty herself, the Wyoming native points to suntan-eschewing icons like Brooke Shields and Nicole Kidman as the poster-women of sunless, beautiful, healthy skin. Still, as a reporter, Denise likes to glow a little glow for the camera, though these days she says it's a spray tan or nothing at all!

Las Vegas resident Dr. H.L. Greenberg of Las Vegas Dermatology will provide the pool partying public with discreet, personal, complimentary skin cancer screenings for two days at two of the hottest pool parties in the valley.

Dr. G is the only dermatologist in Vegas to offer free skin cancer screening through actress Marcia Cross's (Desperate Housewives) Skin Cancer Takes Friends organization, sponsored by Olay and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. By combining skin cancer awareness with a fun, non-threatening event, and by bringing that service directly to the local industry crowd, Dr. G is telling us all to enjoy the desert sun responsibly just as our casinos and clubs encourage us to game and party responsibly.

"I'm able to effect a change very quickly," says Dr. G about his local dermatologic practice. "We typically don't have to wait a long time to see positive results. There's a lot of satisfaction in being able to diagnose and treat a problem quickly."

Please join RawVegas.TV, Las Vegas Dermatology and The Circuit at Bare and Tao Beach this weekend for the Pale Is The New Black Tour and show your support for skin cancer awareness by getting checked out at the pool. Yeah baby....

Save the date and save your hide...

The Circuit Presents The Pale Is The New Black Tour 2008 featuring discreet, complimentary skin cancer screenings and free sunscreen samples by Vegas' own Dr. H.L. Greenberg of Las Vegas Dermatology, hosted by Raw Vegas TV's own Denise Pernula at the following locations:

* Thursday 5/29: Bare Pool, 2-4 p.m.

* Friday 5/30: Tao Beach, 1-3 p.m.

"Not all sunscreen was created equal!"

Dr. G saves your hide:

1. Throw out any sunscreen older than one year. The active ingredients break down, rendering you unprotected.

2. Apply at least an SPF 15 (or greater) sunscreen before going outside, giving it ample time to be absorbed.

3. Look for sunscreen with Avobenzone (aka Parasol-1789). This blocks both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

4. Reapply! The blocking agent breaks down easily. Some newer sunscreens have stabilized the active ingredient so it lasts longer.

5. No matter what your complextion "pale" is your helthiest version of yourself, the un-UV-damaged version of you that is "the new black", en vogue, in other words, hot!

5.23.08 - The end of an era?

FALL OF THE EMPIRE
Moments before Memorial Day Weekend, Empire Ballroom closes doors

"Everything happens for a reason." One exec at Empire Ballroom is handling the news relatively well--Empire has closed just hours before DJ duo Scooter & Lavelle were scheduled to perform. Memorial Day Weekend was already looking to be a dreary, drizzly one when managers received, on Thursday, May 22, an eviction letter from land-owner Metroflag, which stated that if back rent in the amount of over $400,000 was not paid in full that day, Empire Ballroom lease-holder Dan Makosky and his team would be evicted.

But this is news to much of the management team who for some time have been receiving notices of delinquency only to be assured, they say, by Makosky that all was well. Despite the fact that current management has made great strides since assuming the helm of the initially sinking Empire Ballroom ship--the property was reportedly $2 million in the hole--a debt of close to $1 million remains, a source reports, "and that's not even counting taxes." Go-go dancer invoices, liquor bills and rent continued to pile up, say additional sources, while Makosky insisted they were being taken care of.

Makosky has yet to comment except to say that he is not yet being represented by any particular lawyer or firm.

At 6:16 p.m. on Friday, May 23, a text blast went out from promoter Bo Karlen's camp stating simply, "EMPIRE AFTERHOURS MOVED 2NITE 2 ASIA NIGHTCLUB 1 BLK. SOUTH ON HARMAN (sic) & LV BLVD NEXT 2 KRAVE." Empire's managers were able to hire out Empire Ballroom's staff to Asia for the night to help absorb the crowd Scooter & Lavelle will no doubt bring. Saturday's afterhours performance by New York's DJ Danny Tenaglia has been moved to Prive while Sunday's Keyshia Cole appearance is still seeking a home.

The Circuit will keep you updated on this developing story as more information becomes available. Additional reporting by Deanna Rilling.

5.21.08 - Celebrate National Skin Cancer Awareness...with a tan!

FAUX TAN & SAVE YOUR HIDE
Sunless tanning at Palms Place's LA Sunset Tan

Sunless tanning doesn't necessarily have to mean fun-less tanning. Memorial Day Weekend is finally upon us and with it, a packed itinerary of daytime pool parties. Ironic then that May should be National Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

But tanning needn't always be risky business. Therefore join me in welcoming to Palms Place the sixth LA Sunset Tan, owners Devin Haman and Jeff Bozz' most opulent yet. Located within the world-class, 50,000 square foot Drift Spa & Pool enclave at Palms Place, and just feet from the very recently opened Simon Restaurant, the salon features eight treatment rooms including the latest in sunless tanning systems.

“LA Sunset Tan is proud to highlight our various options in sunless tanning during National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. We offer something for everyone including all the benefits of a gorgeous tan without ever stepping out in the sun,” says LA Sunset Tan owner, Devin Haman.

Least expensive among those options is the California Tan Sunless AutoBronzer with drying tower delivers a flawless experience in less than one minute for just $35, the color lasting on average 5-7. The VersaSpa unit by MagicTan combines skin-enhancing treatments and sunless tanning (including an anti-aging "top coat") into one sophisticated system for only $45, the color lasting 7-10 days.

But the most effective and longest lasting sunless tanning goes on in the Infinity Sun Custom Airbrush Theater, which merges sunless tanning and high-end skincare in less than five minutes, lasting up to 14 days at a cost of $75. An artistically talented tanning professional can also play with contour and shading to enhance your body's best features... True, many businesses in Vegas offer similar sounding packages and services, but after a rub down, scrub down and spray down, those other tanning joints just seem to pale in comparison. Call 702-942-7777 or visit online to book an appointment.

Save the Date...

* Friday 5/30: Party with the entire cast of Sunset Tan and resident DJ Skribble at the Palms Pool & Bungalows.

TIFF'S MEOW
Exclusive news from Vegas' fiercest female promotrix

She's already Mastered the art of the Weekend. But sexy veteran promoter Tiffany Masters is coming out of retirement and has now set her sights on a mid-week party.

"Very classy, very sexy," says Masters of her Vanity Wednesday, set to be bestowed upon a "preferred" list of locals on May 14. The post-prime time, late-night party will kick-off at 1 a.m. weekly in the Chandelier Room with a house music format, bringing back those old school party vibes of yore in conjunction with the team at Cathouse Loungerie.

Cathouse will play host to the festivities each week, Masters says, because "their staff is amazing, they have the best staff in Vegas." Expect an exclusive crowd of familiar faces and more behind the scenes players, the sort Masters remembers from parties the likes of the Dragon afterhours at China Grill. "The whole vibe was that you knew who were going to see week after week."

Inspired by the Chandelier Room's voyeuristic makeup table where the CatHouse Coquettes primp nightly, much to the delight of diners and later, the party crowd, Vanity will enjoy support from VIP hosting company Cabana Candy and an assortment of local modeling agencies.

Plus, with neighboring LAX and the Excalibur's Thunder From Down Under going off nearby, Vanity will likely enjoy a healthy dose of girl power and will feature a rotation of house DJs, weekly events like Masters' annual Socialite Party and sponsorships from Eminence Luxury Vehicles and 702-Ageless. "You know you'll see celebrities, you know you'll see beautiful women" and moreover, "lots of gifts, lots of fun and lots of love."

Vanity begins Wednesday, May 14. To RSVP now, call CatHouse at 702-262-4228.

5.2.08 - Let's party like it's 1978!
5.2.08 - Are two Prides better than one?

YOUR PRIDE IS SHOWING
Pride Week 2008 hits an unexpected snag

Is there such a thing as too much Pride? A rift has formed in the Las Vegas gay community, centering around Pride Week. Organized by SNAPI (the Southern Nevada Association of Pride, Inc., the official governing body that supports countless nonprofit programs and events), the festival runs from April 28 through May 4 and features, among its list of activities, the 10th annual Pride Night Parade and the Pride Ball. As nightclubs hold an important position in the itinerary for the week, men’s and women’s parties, drag bingo and pool parties are organized and hosted by sponsoring venues such as Piranha, Freezone and the Blue Moon Resort, as well as not-exclusively gay properties like the Luxor. For Vegas locals transplanted from Boston, New York and San Francisco, Pride Week, the Pride Parade and the partying that comes with them are anticipated like an adult spring break.

But while web-surfers might easily find their way to LasVegasPride.org, SNAPI’s official website, they might also end up on LasVegasPride.com, a web domain purchased by Krave Nightclub which redirects folks to their own week-long Pride event—Sin City Pride. By all appearances, Sin City Pride looks like the official Pride Week festival.

Drama! Vegas has an excess of everything else, so why not Pride? How can you have too much of a good thing?! Well, if the festivals run in direct opposition to one another and split the attention of a community celebrating its unity, that’s how.

Speaking for SNAPI, Vice President Bob Napierala explains that the rift formed over a contract dispute. He says Krave failed to make good on a commitment to pay $12,000 over 12 months for a year of festival ramp-up activities which would culminate in Krave being the chief sponsor of Pride 2008. After only two installments, Napierala says, the payments stopped. Despite all attempts to collect, a $10,000 balance remains, and Krave lost the sponsorship package. Krave’s Kelly Murphy counters that the deal specifically included a SNAPI Saturday monthly, which he says SNAPI ceased arranging and marketing after two months.

Murphy also points out that Krave gave SNAPI an elaborate Pride 2008 proposal, one that would encompass the entertainment, celebrities, DJs and marketing for all of Pride Week. “Unfortunately,” says Murphy, “SNAPI remained very short-sighted and summarily dismissed our proposal. Krave decided to proceed with our events in a manner that would supplement the SNAPI event.” SNAPI’s reaction: If it were supplemental, there would be no conflicting events.

Despite insistence by some SNAPI members that Krave be booted from Las Vegas Pride for the website stunt, Napierala fought to keep them in; Krave will keep their festival booth and walk in the parade. At press time, they were also scheduled to have hosted a Community Counseling Center benefit on Wednesday, April 30. “The whole point of Pride is inclusion,” he says. “That would be against what Pride is all about.” There’s a lot of emotion behind Pride for Napierala, last year’s festival president. “The biggest issue for me is, why would a for-profit business take over the website of a not-for-profit organization and lead it to their own website? It’s deceptive; it’s misleading.”

Like everything else these days, it just comes down to money. At a standstill, with SNAPI waiting for Krave to pay up and Krave waiting for SNAPI to start up the monthly Saturday party again, no one is budging. Las Vegas Pride and Sin City Pride are both underway and both reporting success. Thursday, both festivals will host men’s parties, and on Saturday, Krave’s Blue Ball goes head-to-head with the official 2008 Pride Ball at Piranha. We’d wish them luck, but if one side actually wins, don’t we all lose?

4.29.08 - Ultralounge-ify your pad

IT'S A MOD MOD WORLD
Because you've graduated from IKEA

Chic and modern doesn't have to mean mass produced. You can have your sofa and customize it, too... You just have to know where to shop. True, in the past you might have been tempted to make the drive to LA just to hit up the IKEA store to fill your new pad with inexpensive, modern-looking furnishings. (Those Swedish do make a great throw-pillow.) But you're not 22 any more (or maybe you are but you just have mature taste). Either way, if you're decorating anything more than a dorm room these days, you need a more than unpainted wood shelves and a cool duvet.

EQ3 opened quietly at Town Square in January (think IKEA meets Urban Outfitters with a touch of Pottery Barn) but now it's time for a design explosion. Join me Thursday from 5-9 p.m. as EQ3 throws a Block Party with the neighboring Design Within Reach. Enjoy sounds by DJ Damian Kane, cocktails courtesy of PINK Vodka and appetizers by Louis's Fish Camp. Scratch-n-save 10-50% off tickets and a drawing for EQ3 gift certificates might also just make the trip worth while.

If your crew is coupling up and multiplying as fast as my friends have been, then you have a long list of gifts to purchase this summer. Think of Thursday as earning extra credit. See you there!

HIT THE BOOKS
Disney's come to save us all

Give the babysitter the night off. Put the kids on one of those controversial leash-things and prepare to earn your Parent of the Year award: Disney’s "High School Musical" is coming to Las Vegas And this Saturday, April 26, you will have the opportunity to redeem yourself from that whole Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana debacle when tickets go on sale for the live, touring performance of the internationally-worshipped ode to adolescent social ladder construction. Performances run June 4 through June 8. Tickets will be available by calling Ticketmaster at 474-4000, visiting the Theatre for the Performing Arts box office, any Ticketmaster outlet, or online at ticketmaster.com/hsmvegas. This should give you just enough time to recover and prepare for the coming of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year”, scheduled for a 2008 release in theaters around the world.

4.14.08 - He saved the best for last

DRAI'S RECIPE FOR "XS"
An exclusive interview with Victor Drai right before the big announcement

Thursday, April 10, 2:30 p.m. Just hours before Tryst Nightclub's two-year anniversary and the always-smiling film producer-turned-restaurateur-turned-nightclub magnate Victor Drai was, well...he was the picture of calm! That's because Victor knew something we didn't.

Another year, another birthday…and for Wynn Las Vegas, another club! Drai would that night be unveiling the name of his new nightclub at Wynn’s Encore tower—set to open December 2008—as only he can: with plenty of pomp and circumstance and a great open bar. Hosted by American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, and with a surprise performance by hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari (pictured right), Drai let the cat out of the bag.

But first, he spoke exclusively to The Circuit.

"XS. That's the name,” and the aim, “to be as excessive as we can be. I hope it will be the most beautiful club ever made.” Inside the 40,000 square-foot space (the inside alone is the size of Tryst, pictured left, and the Tryst lagoon), guests will delight to find a nightclub built around an incorporated pool. While the pool will be open during the day for hotel guests, Drai was skeptical as to whether or not the XS pool will in any way resemble or behave like the spate of “adult” pools coming on line in recent years. “There are too many pools already in these environments. I don’t want to be in that business. I don’t like the crowd in the daytime. They’re too rough for me,” said the refined gentleman. “I don’t think it fits the Wynn.”

As for the interior: “Very sexy, very pretty, very rich.” Drai said he essentially has carte blanche with Steve Wynn to design with official Wynn Designer Roger Thomas, the nightclub of his dreams. He pointed out that when he took over La Bête and turned it into the Tryst we know today, he had the constraints of working in a finite, existing space. “Steve was wonderful,” he gushed. “He didn’t want us to be limited.” For XS, it seems the sky’s the limit and not a very limiting limit, at that.

In the Weekly’s interview with Drai last August for a piece on the Icons of Las Vegas nightlife, the mogul said he intended this third project to be his pièce de résistance, his final work in Las Vegas. “There’s enough business in Vegas for plenty of clubs. That’s been proven. And I’ll have two clubs on top. That’s how I see it.” And yes, he confirmed, “Definitely no more clubs in Vegas, that’s for sure.” What is not out of the realm of possibility is another new project in LA, where Drai lives when not in Vegas. In fact, he adds, people have been bugging him to dive back into LA’s nightlife scene with “something small, like Drai’s.”

Though Drai (pictured right) might yield to pressure to grace the City of Angels once more with an eponymous venue or some other project of his design, with XS he does not intend to stray from his tried and true methods, those being to focus on consistency. Unlike many of his competitors, Drai refrains from using paid celebrity hosts to create variety in his weekly party offerings. “And it will stay that way. I don’t pay celebrities. I don’t believe in it. I believe people will continue to come for what we offer. I’ve been doing this for 15 years this way. I’m not going to change it.”

XS is currently slated for a December 2008 opening with a schedule created not to step on big sister Tryst’s toes; the clubs will only overlap Friday and Saturday so we can deduce there will be a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday industry night. “Hopefully you’ll see a lot of me in XS.” While he knows the public is excited to see what Drai’s been keeping up his sleeve all this time, he admitted, “I can’t wait to see it myself!” It’s not unlike having a new baby. Having just welcomed into the world a two week –old baby girl named Charlotte, Drai exclaimed “I’m going to raise the entrance [age] to 25!”

4.12.08 - Three reasons to put your pants on and hit the town!

"EFF THE STRIP"
Red Room's answer to the rat race

Let the anti-Strip sentiments continue. Joining the ranks of other Strip-alternative parties such as Mondays at the Roadrunner on Pebble and Eastern, locals favorite the Red Room Saloon debuts its slightly more aggressive party, FTS (artfully, “F--k the Strip”) Fridays, with sounds by Mr. Goodvybe and DJ White Chocolate spinning Top 40, hip-hop and vocal house.

Says Red Room co-owner Mike Taing, “It will have a small club atmosphere, no door cover, cheap drinks and bottle service.” FTS kicks off this Friday, April 11, and the first Friday of every month will remain Snap Shot with Ozzy, Johnny Rox and the Rawkerz crew.

PUTTING UP WALLS
Lookin' good, Hef!

Continuing with the subtle and constant improvement of the Playboy Club, the N9NE Group is thrilled to unveil (soon) the demi-club’s new ultra-high-tech video wall. Composed of 60 plasma screens, the wall typically scrolls through thought-provoking images of vintage Playboy covers, centerfold shoots, Mansion parties and some very recognizable celebrity faces (and other bits) thrown in for good measure. But once the installation is complete in early May, the screens will interact with Video-SL, the latest in Rane’s Serato technology, allowing resident DJVJ Mark Stylz to incorporate the screens into the mix. This next advance in N9NE Group’s tech-savvy setup comes just after Hugh Hefner’s 82nd birthday, solidifying Hef as the hippest octogenarian to ever wear a bathrobe.

3.21.08 - Company kitchen changing hands

CHANGES IN THE RANKS
After four chefs move on, Company to close, re-open seven days a week

Change comes fast in an ever-expanding city. Executive Chef Adam Sobel tendered his resignation from both Company American Bistro and Pure Management Group on Wednesday, March 19, saying in a text to his colleagues that the change would take effect immediately. This departure comes fast on the heels of the exits of Chef David Varley (first to depart), Chef Marcel Vigneron (of foamy Top Chef fame), and pastry chef Ralph "Ralphie" Perrazzo. With every major chef gone from the Company "Resume of Talent", it is said that "Chef Mike" (of PMG's banquets department) will revamp (and, reportedly, rebrand) the venue.

According to Luxor's restaurant reservation department, Company will be closed for three days following service this Saturday, March 22 (normally dark Sun and Mon), and will reopen on Friday, March 28, after which the restaurant will be open for dinner seven days a week. This was later confirmed by a PMG rep. Additionally, the restaurant's doors will now open at 5 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m.

A source close to PMG reports that an all-staff meeting was held last week where some Company employees were laid off, told the restaurant would be closed until further notice as of Saturday, with no mention of re-opening or of a new seven-day schedule. It has since been speculated that this could either signal a change in Company's ownership from PMG to Luxor (Lucky Strike has already been transferred over to The Rio's hands) or perhaps a necessary rebranding now that the opening chefs of note are gone. However PMG reps are confident "It will always be a PMG restaurant; the restaurant's closing for two days [sic] to train the chefs."

On the other hand, the fact that Luxor Steakhouse will be closed for renovations as of Monday, March 24 (tentatively set to reopen on July 20), pokes a handful of holes in the theory that Company will be changing hands. It makes far more sense that with the steakhouse--a foundation restaurant for any Vegas casino--being closed, Company, with it's protein-rich menu, is the perfect substitute.

Or maybe it's just good timing. Says one source with ties to the kitchen, Chef Sobel was told by PMG that due to flagging numbers, Company would be scaling back to the level of a Houston's or an Outback, "no more quail eggs, let's put it that way."

On a somewhat related note, Luxor will be getting back a venue this week as well. CatHouse Restaurant & Loungerie will re-open this Friday with some small changes planned for their weekly schedule as well as a grand re-opening in the works. In an official statement issue March 20, a CatHouse rep confirms "We are pleased to announce CatHouse at Luxor will reopen Friday, March 21. Hours of operation will change slightly with the restaurant open daily at 5:30 p.m., and the ultra lounge open Friday, Saturday and Monday at 10:30 p.m." Reopening tag line: "The cat was away, now it's time to play."

Play on, Vegas, play on!

*** UPDATE 3/22 *** - Company will now be closed for only two days in addition to its usual dark days of Sunday and Monday, therefore it will reopen on Thursday, March 27.

3.20.08 - Oakenfold to join our fold

THE DJ IS IN
Oakenfold puts down Vegas roots

(As first reported in the Las Vegas Weekly, by Xania Woodman.) We teased you in February with the promise of an “earth-shattering announcement of a musical nature” from the Palms. Prepare to reap the benefits of your patience.

Accepting his first residency in 10 years, since appearing at Home in London, DJ/producer Paul Oakenfold has entered into a landmark promotional partnership with N9NE Group to re-brand Saturday nights at the Palms’ Rain nightclub.

Paul Oakenfold Presents Perfecto Saturdays is slated to launch in August or September with Oakenfold himself on the decks a minimum of twice a month. When the artist is not in residence, others on Oakenfold’s Perfecto label and top touring artists will guest DJ. The full production show, says Michael Fuller (elevated recently to vice president of N9NE Group), features custom props, a cadre of performance artists and choreographed go-go routines. “Think Cirque du Soleil meets Ibiza,” says Fuller. The new venture comes with a whopping $60,000-$70,000 weekly budget, none of which, stresses Fuller, will go toward celebrity guest hosts. “Everyone else has gone the celebrity route; we’ve gone the production route. This is going to be the most elaborate production on a Saturday night in a Vegas nightclub.”

The residency will commence once Oakenfold completes his annual summer world tour. According to Fuller, Oakenfold insists on having adequate time to properly promote his every project.

“When you think about Paul’s career, he’s always done everything to the highest level. His name is never attached to anything weak or that has failed. He’s the largest and most recognized brand [in the industry]. From his remix career to his movie career he’s really crossed over into many genres … He’s in a class of his own.”

In addition to DJing, Oakenfold brings to the table possible premieres for the movies he soundtracks, visits from the artists he regularly remixes and a live CD with partners iTunes and MySpace accompanied by a live video. “He has relationships across the board with everybody,” Fuller says.

This partnership will be accompanied by a reorganization and minor functional renovation of the club (pictured left). “[Rain] was ahead of its time, and it’s had seven years of major success. It’s still a very relevant nightclub, but the changes will make it more of a standardized nightclub.” The repositioning of Rain will begin with the launch of Rain Fridays on April 4, a night meant to deepen the musical mix by bouncing back and forth between hip-hop and the new age of crossover acts like Z-Trip, Rev Run and DJ Steve Aoki.

Ghostbar, Rain’s original partner in crime, will be receiving a little love as well. “It’s getting some cosmetic upgrades, just prettying it up a little,” says Fuller. The tower-top club will also get some new image events to keep it in our consciousness. “Ghostbar is, believe it or not, our most profitable venue,” and it was that kind of brand loyalty that attracted Oakenfold to the idea of collaboration. “From his mouth, there’s no other place in America to have a residency other than Vegas, because the people come to you, it’s the entertainment capital, and it has international appeal.”

3.19.08 - Hef shares the wealth

DANGEROUS CURVES AHEAD
Hef's mates prep their girlfriend for wifedom

What do Kendra, Bridget and Holly of E!'s "The Girls Next Door" have in common? Other than the fact that they're all platinum blond. Oh, and besides the whole dating Hef thing. And try to ignore the big boobs. The answer is one very lucky mutual girlfriend Stacy Burke for whom the ladies will throw the world's largest bachelorette party on Friday, March 28 and film it for their hit show. Over 1000 women are expected to attend this huge event at Rain nightclub where every lady gets free entry, receives a veil at the door and will enjoy Perrier-Jouet Champagne until 1 a.m. Guys, cancel your plans. As any Vegas party veteran knows, there's something about those veils that makes a girl wanna get freaky!

3.16.08 - The next big sting?

ANGELS MAKING WAVES
Angel Music Group flourishes despite legal attack

Don't believe the hype. Life in Clubland isn’t all sparkler service and block-rockin’- beats. Sometimes it can get downright ugly. And when it does, no one knows better how to pull it together and refocus than the residents of Vegas’ ever-expanding nightlife empire. Even while battling former business partners in Federal court, the ranks of Angel Music Group (AMG) continue to grow in the days prior to the opulent Wet Republic Ultra-pool's opening at MGM Grand.

A preliminary injunction for a restraining order as well as a $90 million law suit were filed in New York on February 27 against Angel Music Group CEO Neil Moffitt and five other AMG employees by former business partners Andrew Fox and Lee Heiman of The Management Group (TMG; owners of Track Entertainment, Clubplanet.com, NewYears.com, nocheLatina.com, CoolJunkie.com, and WantTickets.com). The case was removed to Federal court on March 4 with a show-cause hearing held that Friday. TMG accuses AMG of essentially disregarding all stipulations of their partnership agreement and—later—the dissolution thereof, and of stealing employees, luring away $1 million client DJ Tiesto, and of making threats of violence.

A little history: TMG and AMG came together for a short while (May 2006-march 2007) after successfully collaborating to bring AMG's Global Gathering brand to the US, the union also a part of TMG's attempt to build a presence in Las Vegas for their own brands. A number of prominent Las Vegas nightlife entities report that they too were at one point in discussion with TMG about forming a partnership. "He's not the most stand-up guy," said one such colleague of Moffitt, "but then on the other hand...," he continued to cast similar and equal doubt about Fox and Heiman saying that should the deal with his company have gone through, he never would have given them as much equity as they eventually would hold in the TMG/AMG partnership as sole Members, 23.7% of AMG each.

According to attorney for the defense Ronald Richards, the allegations against AMG specifically painting Moffitt out to be a bully were "patently false and defamatory." That matter is essentially settled, assures Richards, except for the remaining quarrel over legal fees and monetary damages, "a minor leftover complaint" incurred during the dissolution of the partnership in March of 2007.

Wait, $90 million? "Minor"?! This case is anything but over.

Numerous allegations remain that AMG has misappropriated trade secrets, lured away key staff members, undercut TMG prices, and specifically that Moffitt has "stolen" TMG client DJ Tiesto (pictured left), the three-time number one DJ in the world who, a source within AMG confirms, was set to begin executing his new contract with AMG after a Memorial Day performance elsewhere in Las Vegas. According to TMG, Tiesto brings in $1 million annually and is named in the document as one of its "most important clients."

While Richards plays down the event, pooh-poohing the accusations which prompted the restraining order and the suit itself, the prosecution points out that AMG agreed to certain relief on Monday, March 10 to adhere to the tenets of their prior agreements which includes dropping any plans with Tiesto, staying out of the Miami market, ceasing to solicit TMG employees to joint AMG and much more. Moffitt has also given his word not to pose any physical threat to Fox and Heiman or their families. "We have been personally assured by his attorney that Mr. Moffitt is not going to do anything and we're taking him at his word," says Hutcher.

What is also certain is that the suit for $90 million in damages is indeed moving forward with the trial likely to occur in six to nine months. “We have every expectation that we will be successful in the end,” says TMG’s attorney Larry Hutcher. "We are confident in our position that our client's claims will be bourne out."

Dodging the fallout, Moffitt and his newly-formed team have persevered in assembling a knock-out lineup of polished talent for their Vegas office, with members hailing from nine different clubs, pools and lounges. Overseeing things are the un-titled equilateral management team of Moffitt, Derek Silberstein, Randy Davila, Brian Klimaski, Zee Zandi, and Steven Klimaski, who share between them a combined club resume of Ice, Jet and Pure Management Group. In a short time, this roster has swelled to include Wet Republic's Lead Host Blake Anthony and hosts Jason Pollack, Travis Zipper, Danielle Kalafut, Matt Nappoli and Ben Sabouri, all with resumes collectively touting Pure, Aura, Tryst, Moorea, Prive, CatHouse and Ice.

By the end of 2008, AMG expects to be successfully overseeing the promotions and programming of three venues at the MGM Grand including Tabu, Studio 54 and Wet Republic Ultra-pool as well as--we hear--an as-yet-unnamed, unannounced nightclub rumored to be arriving with the fall (at the earliest) to the MGM's soon-to-be-famous Club Row. Where's that, you ask? I'll give you a hint. If it wasn't called Club Row before, it should be then!

GET YOUR GLUTTONY ON
The Service Industry's new fave sin

As sins go, lust is probably the clear winner. But we’re willing to bet that gluttony isn’t too far behind. Vox Wine Lounge is betting on that, too, with the launch of Gluttony Monday industry night, “redefining hospitality happy hour.” The event encourages locals, industry members and music aficionados alike to book tables in the Vox dining room where they will be rewarded for their efforts—lets face it, Vox isn’t exactly located center-Strip—with 50 percent off the custom menu prices from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. (alcohol not included). DJs, socialites and food & beverage industry personalities of note will be tapped to either spin, or in the case of the non-DJ host, select the soundtrack for the night. Local favorite DJ Michael Fuller, aka The Funkler, had the honor of launching the night on Monday, March 10, with director $hecky Green slated for March 17. “Gluttony is special, and we plan to grow it [organically] into something surreal and wonderful,” says rep Jimmy Foster. Reservations were completely booked for Week 1, making tables at subsequent weeks a hot commodity. Call 407-7780 for your date to sin with the SINers.

VEGAS PREPARES TO BARE
And the Hard Rock rolls on with a new Rehab team

As sins go, lust is probably the clear winner. Laser hair-removal technicians and tanning-salon operators are raising the tools of their trade in glee as Las Vegans get ready to once again plunge into pool-party season. What? You aren’t “Rehab-ready” yet?! Better hit the gym—you only have until Wednesday, March 26 to tighten the abs, banish the fuzz and get un-lily white before Venus (pictured right), next in the line of adult pools, opens at the Mirage for the 2008 summer season. Pure Management Group will continue--at least for now, it seems--to oversee the smooth sailing of this luxury ship, a serene oasis of olive and palm trees, misters, day beds and chilled towel jockeys. DJs will spin on Saturdays when Venus imposes its only cover charge.

Continuing with a quick ’n dirty pool update, the non-Rehab portion of the Hard Rock pool opened to the public on March 11. Bare Pool Lounge opened at the Mirage on Thursday, March 13 and Wet Republic, the new “ultra-pool” at the MGM Grand, is slated to open to the public on April 15 as the first pool with convenient valet access, putting an end to the mile-long walk through a casino in your skivvies. The newly renovated Rehab pool will open on April 27 for its fifth season, which it intends to be the center of a semi-scripted reality show featuring the patrons and staff (more on staff changes in a sec …). Tao Beach (pictured left) will also debut its concrete shores on April 24. Ditch Fridays at the Palms Pool & Bungalows will resume on May 2. Red Rock Retreat—complete with new resident DJ Jack Lafleur—will begin on Cinco de Mayo, May 5. Cherry will also soon begin two nighttime pool events, Reggae Wednesdays and the Sunday Night Live rock concert series.

But before the sand comes some dirt. So far, the most buzz surrounds Rehab, where, beyond just a facelift and the expansion, the pop culture pervasive party will receive a few new faces. As reported first by The Circuit last week, the final two of the three founding fathers of Rehab—Hard Rock Director of Client Development Adam Nixon and Director of Special Events Chad Pallas—quit the property, puncturing an unmistakable hole in the vast Rehab think-tank. Ascending the throne will be former Body English VIP host, now Executive Nightlife Host Shannon Dupont, who will assemble her own team and take up the reins at Vegas’ original and longest-running adult pool party.

Nixon and Pallas have joined Station Casinos in California, where (for the next year anyway) they will develop nightlife venues for the casino company. But rumor has it that in a year, they may return, hopefully reunite with third Rehab founder Lafleur and perhaps even revive the Pond pool parties at Green Valley Ranch.

Now, get back to those crunches.

2.29.08 - UPDATE: Jack Lafleur's next big move, more on Red Rock

GUESS WHO'S BACK
DJ Jack Lafleur signs on with Station Casinos for the summer pool party season

Did we call it or did we call it?! Following up on yesterday's big news about Chad Pallas, Adam Nixon and Kyle Markman departing the Hard Rock and all making the move to Station Casinos, The Circuit received some exclusive subsequent info on Jack Lafleur, who was also--before departing to focus on his DJ career--one of the founding fathers of Rehab.

In a deal made Thursday, February 27, DJ Jack Lafleur has signed on with Station Casinos as resident DJ for this season two of Red Rock Retreat. The weekly industry escape to Red Rock Resort will tentatively kick off on May 5, Cinco de Mayo. This year's go-round is said to have been "beefed up a little...with more exciting pool events during the daytime and if Jack's on the decks, you can bet on it.

"This year we have had a little more time for preparation," said Natalia Badzjo, Nightlife Marketing Manager for Station Casinos, adding that a Green Valley Ranch version of Retreat has been discussed and that everyone involved is keen on the idea.

In addition to the Retreat, Red Rock will soon begin its new Reggae Wednesdays and Sunday Night Live concerts, both poolside at Cherry with the latter featuring four rotating live, local rock bands. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show will run from 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

A Quick 'n Dirty Pool Party Update: The non-Rehab portion of the Hard Rock pool will open on March 11. Bare Pool Lounge at the Mirage (pictured left) opens on March 13. Wet Republic, the new "ultra-pool" at MGM Grand, is slated to open to the public on or around April 15. The newly renovated Rehab pool complex will open on April 27. Tao Beach is rumored to be opening on Thursday, April 24. And finally, Ditch Fridays at the Palms Pool & Bungalows will resume on May 2nd.

2.28.08 - BREAKING NEWS: Exit of Rehab founders complete

GO WEST, YOUNG MEN
Pallas and Nixon are California-bound

Sin City's loss is California's gain...at least for one year. Researching the impending wave of summer pool parties, The Circuit has discovered that Hard Rock Director of Client Development Adam Nixon and Director of Special Events Chad Pallas left the Hard Rock today, completing the exit of the three founding fathers of the infamous Rehab pool party; fellow founder Jack Lafleur left the Hard Rock at the end of June 2007 to pursue his DJ career.

Nixon and Pallas have joined up with Station Casinos where, as Co-Executive Directors of Nightlife Development and Nightlife Conception, the pair will design nightlife venues from the ground up for different Stations properties to address various demographics and, say Nixon and Pallas speaking exclusively to The Circuit, assist in all aspects of nightlife for future Station venues.

For one year beginning March 10, the team of Nixon and Pallas will work their magic at Station Casino locations in San Francisco and Sacramento, CA. (Rumor has it that upon their return, the two will turn their attention to Station's Vegas properties including Viva, a $4 Billion property being build near the Panorama Towers, just West of the I-15.) "[Station Casino execs] the Fertittas and [Red Rock COO] Kevin Kelley have the most exciting product in the market and we're excited to be a part of that, whether it's in California or at other Station properties in the future."

"We're both ecstatic about the opportunity to parlay our skill sets," explained the pair. "We'd like to take it to the next level, to take our ideas from conception to construction to a fully functional product or event."

Pallas started with the Hard Rock nearly a decade ago, Nixon shortly after Rehab's inception five years ago. In that time each had a vast impact on the Hard Rock and on the Las Vegas nightlife scene overall establishing Rehab Sundays, Relax Mondays and wild Sundays in the Parlor at Body English, among others. Keen to express their gratitude, the team says "We owe a tremendous amount of our success to the Hard Rock. It's a wonderful property...They've been amazing...given us amazing opportunities in particular Matt Green, Sr. VP of Operations. They've done nothing but great things for us and we wish nothing but great things for them in the future," says Nixon and Pallas, adding, "it will be a nice break from the Vegas market."

The Circuit has also learned that Hard Rock Marketing Manager Kyle Markman also gave notice today, entirely coincidentally! Markman will rejoin former Hard Rock President Kelley at Stations, specifically Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch, as Senior Marketing Manager; neither Pallas nor Nixon had any prior knowledge of Markman's departure.

With Pallas, Nixon and Lafleur all having moved on, one can easily speculate that the three might eventually find a way to reunite in the future. Rehab is slated to begin its fifth season on April 27, after renovations are completed. In a perfect world, one year from now, the trio of Pallas, Nixon and Lafleur will be back together, doing what they do best, bringing the party to the people. Hey guys, while you're at it, bring back the Pond!

STATE OF THE UNION
Renovations, reinventions, innovations...

If you’ve ever hired a contractor, then you know that completion dates are to be taken with an entire pillar of salt. But the staggering number of venues poised to descend upon the Vegas nightlife landscape is enough to make us wet ourselves (insert Paris Hilton joke here) with anticipation!

In addition to the MGM Grand’s adult pool Wet Republic, rumored to be opening April 15, a new nightclub is expected to grace the casino floor’s nightlife corridor further on into the year. Over at TI, Love & Hate—Tangerine’s reincarnation—was last said to be arriving in “Spring 2008,” but in light of Pure Management Group’s recent IRS troubles, it’s anyone’s guess when we’ll actually get to love PMG’s new hot spot.

A source within the N9NE Group confirms, “We do have two new brands that we are placing in [Rain] over the next few months,” adding that “Ghostbar is perfect as it is.” Changes will begin to appear in the second and third quarters of the year, beginning with an earth-shattering announcement of a musical nature …

Also slated for spring is Sugarcane ultralounge, which will accompany Sushisamba restaurant when it arrives in the Palazzo shops in late April or early May. Tao’s Turkish/Roman bathhouse-themed restaurant and lounge is looking at a mid-May reveal, though we have been told on the sly to keep Memorial Day weekend free. Understated and organic, the most recent renderings show dark woods, delicate slate blue, cream and gold and, of course, a long corridor of water-filled basins leading upstairs to the skylight-dappled lounge where floor-to-ceiling windows give party-goers an unforgettable view from under a domed ceiling.

At the Hard Rock, Carey Hart’s Wasted Space music venue has slid back from March to “in the early summer, May/June.” The renovated Rehab pool complex is slated to debut along with the party’s fifth season at the very end of April.

The fire at Monte Carlo has pushed Light Group’s Brand Steakhouse & Lounge back from April to May, while Yellowtail Sushi is still on track for June at Bellagio. An insider also mentioned that Mist and Caramel lounges are both due for some spiffing up, likely in 2008, to help the mature lounges keep pace with sleek Jet and the shiny new Bank.

The much-renamed Lounge at Trader Vic’s (aka Head Candy, Starr Bar) is now featuring the musical stylings of lounge singer Jimmy Hopper, formerly of the Bellagio’s Fontana Lounge, performing Thursday-Sunday at 10 p.m.

Automatic Slim’s is ready (in theory) to rock the front of the Venetian, but according to partner Jonathan Fine, it will have to wait for the go-ahead from General Growth Properties to begin work on the building’s façade. Fine predicts a late-summer arrival in that space formerly occupied by Venus and, later, Vivid.

Speaking of space, the intriguingly named ND’s Space will touch down in the Palazzo shops on August 29. When completed, the lounge, intimate theater and One Shot coffee shop will occupy the entire third floor of the shops. The lounge’s six large windows and terrace are currently visible from Las Vegas Boulevard.

At the tail-end of the year, Victor Drai will unveil his third Vegas nightclub—said to be his most beautiful yet—at Wynn’s Encore property. The venue, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to open with the rest of the property in December and is “overall, much bigger than Tryst,” according to an insider, “different, maybe even sexier than Tryst as well.”

Downtown, The Hive bar and concert venue is steadily sliding back from an initially anticipated April opening into May and perhaps beyond. The once-mentioned Club V has been split, with one half rumored to have been set aside to become Rockin’ Ricks sometime this summer, and the other—also zoned for a nightclub/tavern—available for lease. You can get the remaining 6,000-square-foot downstairs and 2,000 upstairs for just $1.75 per square foot.

So, anyone looking to open a nightclub???
