9/17 - 9/23 What a girl wants? How about sexy clothes, top-shelf drinks, hot rock 'n roll and some dirty dancing. This week had it all! Tuesday night I visited VegasExposure's Chris Parsons' new Addiction Boutique on Eastern at Silverado. There I picked up my first new pair of jeans since a Clinton was in office. After, I met up with Colton et al at Scores Gentlemen's Club where we enjoyed prime rib and martini glasses of mashed potatoes while watching topless women put their ankles by their ears. Not usually my bag but the Scores two-year anniversary made a fine exception to my no-nudity-during-dinner rule. I met up with Parsons again at Blush Boutique Nightclub where he was hosting the second of his opening parties. Before long, thanks to the many liquor reps who flocked to Wynn for this event, I had a glass of Louis XIII in one hand and a glass of Dom Perignon '99 in the other. Not a bad start to the week! Too bad I also came down with a raging cold just one hour after that glorious moment. Wednesday night, sick though I was, I visited the Big Blue Box recording studio behind the Palms where Morpheus Blak and his band the Dark Stars were doing a very special taping on the sound stage. Deep Rock Drive, as the space and show are called, will soon be broadcasting shows the likes of Nine Inch Nails on Halloween and Michael Jackson on NYE to the masses from that black-painted flex space. Hopefully I didn't spread any germs to the band as they will be giving their first public performance on Saturday, September 29 at Beauty Bar. Thursday night I dined at the Palm Restaurant at Caesars with a legion of fellow Cornell Hotel School alumni before heading off to Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce to see the Royal Jelly rock revue. If you haven't see this show I must ask what the heck you think you've been doing with your Thursdays since the ladies of the Deuce started stripping down to their pasties to your fave rock anthems. Hottttt! Don't ask, just go. Saturday night I wined up with Chris and Sonny of Rock 'n Roll Wine at the second annual Wine Amplified festival at Mandalay Bay. Walking up to registration I could already hear Chris Clouse rocking out on stage and during Sugar Ray's performance we all scooted up to the VIP deck of the new casino above Moorea. Fill your glass up, Xania? Wine not?! Sunday afternoon, just before sundown I popped into Bare Pool Lounge to celebrate with the other Prom III king and queen nominees. Of course, by then only Colton was left but we two and Kalika enjoyed a sunset cocktail before calling it a week. So while we're at it, why not follow me here and vote for Colton and I as Prom King and Queen?! Maybe third time will indeed be a charm? VOTE
9/10 - 9/16 Right Gin founder Lyons Brown calls it his "noble work." Tuesday, 9/11 I journeyed downtown in a two-part search for innovative, delicious new Cocktails of the Week for the Weekly. My first stop was to Sidebar where Erica mixed us up a Watermelon Mojito followed by her new Hippie Apple Martini, Juicy Fruit and her Creamsicle. That last one os so good you can actually taste the wooden stick and the sweet melty goodness running down the wrapper onto your hand as you gobble it up on the curb on a hit, sunny day. That's a damn good drink! Next stop was the Downtown Cocktail Room where George "Cocktail Pants" Sproule was eager to try out his new Dilled Downtown Bloody Mary on this Mary lover. Spicy, strong and fresh, this martini version of the popular brunch treat welcomed Mary into the big leagues along side the typical nighttime fare. Excellent. Tuesday I visited Beauty Bar where Dillon Reese and I toyed around with some Hendrix Liquid Experience energy drinks and came up with this little number. What followed next was a very energized visit to Body English with a very tipsy Colton, his theory on beating a cold being to get the virus wasted. I prefer matzo ball soup and Dayquil, personally. Thursday we hit Tao for a bit before walking--yes, we actually walked--down the Strip to Wynn to say hello to Jack Lafleur, DJing at his new Project Thursdays at Blush. Friday night I dined at Grape Street Cafe, which is, in my opinion, one the best dinner values in Vegas. If you haven't been yet, don't let the Buffalo and Lake Mead strip mall location put you off--it's wine-tastic! Saturday morning I flew out to L.A. for my girlfriend Kim Koury's 30th birthday bash at the Santa Monica Bar & Grill. I first flew through the smog that was choking Vegas that day and ended up right over the actual wild fires that were raging in Cali. It seriously looked like something had blown up. Very scary, people, but the 40 minute flight sure beats the heck out of driving. Last time I was in L.A. I nearly broke my neck, spend $200 and two horrific hours with a Beverly Hills chiropractor and then broke up with someone upon my return. While wearing a neck brace. Not good. It was with the utmost trepidation that I returned to the cursed city. Luckily, Kim's Club Tubthump '90s party was infinitely better than a pinched nerve. I really hate '90s tunes but I love my girl Kim so... While there, I finally got to meet Elliot of UrbanDaddy.com, one of my many other freelance gigs. Sunday afternoon we breakfasted hippie-style at the Santa Monica farmers market before driving out to Malibu's Moon Shadows for calamari and Bloody Marys on the deck overlooking the Pacific. I may not like L.A. or Hollywood and all the crap that comes with but doing the Malibu life for a day, laying out on opium beds and watching the whole of Israel and the Middle East eat whole wheat bagels and lox with caperberries, well it's just too surreal not to enjoy! Coming home Sunday night was not easy.
9/3 - 9/9 Just because was Labor Day Weekend doesn't mean that I'm going to spend the holiday laboring away in the office like I did last weekend. Pulling together the Weekly's annual nightlife issue damn near killed me. At one point I was slung between two office chairs at the GMG office, trying to catch a catnap at 2 a.m. on my second of three near all-nighters. Needless to say, the issue came out and a few of the Icons interviewed for the cover feature have reported that they've never before gotten quite so many phone calls and texts after getting some press. I'm flattered! And honored. I'm also exhausted. And that is why the *new* Circuit is coming to you from poolside at Cherry. Oh yeah, I am Red Rockin' it this holiday and Retreat is just the thing to work out the kinks I managed to get in my neck and back from 10 straight days in my office (that's an office/cubicle for those of you not fortunate enough to have one of these 3 x 5 palaces). I arrived just after 1 a.m. late Sunday night and made a beeline for the bathtub, a bottle of wine and some dark chocolate that could make you cry.
Wednesday 9/5 I hit LAX for Bob Sinclar's performance. it was hot. Well, truth be told, both the performance and the venue were equally hot. I didn't stay long but during my "quick" two-hour hit 'n run I did see a who's who of nightlife personalities. All talk was of the impending VMA weekend. Thursday night I stopped back into Blush where Tiesto was hanging out and enjoying the sounds of DJ Jack Lafleur on his new Project Thursday residency. Much to Jack's shock and delight Tiesto, asked to have a picture taken with him! Friday night, VMA madness was in full swing at Tao Beach where I caught a private performance by Linkin Park. The stage set up behind the pool was great though the sound could have admittedly been a bit louder. Chester was in fine form, doing all that great screaming he's so known for and I thoroughly enjoyed the high-energy atmosphere that was buzzing. This was, of course, because everyone still had some evergy at this point! After the show I proceeded over to Noir and didn't come out until after 6 a.m.! But you can read more about that in the next Weekly. Suffice it to say there was nothing noir about the sky when I crawled out of there.
Saturday afternoon I hit three of the major VMA gifting suites including the official VMA Talent Lounge at the Palms, the Style Villas at Venus Pool Lounge and the Star Lounge at the Hard Rock. The best by far, both for organization and the quility of celeb swag was the Style Villas. I won't recount my entire haul but let's just say it kicked Sundance's ass into the pool! What can I say, I'm a swag hag. Sunday afternoon I hit Tao Beach for a deliscious Poolside and departed just before the clouds came a rollin' in to bring on VMA night. Then, I hid!
This Week The Circuit likes: Rosh Hashanah (Happy New Year to my tribe!), Blush, Noir, post-VMA bliss, and Los Angeles, here I come!
8/27 - 9/2 Things definitely didn't slow down this week, even as the Nightlife Issue was being assembled and I was catching 4 hours of sleep a night, some spent in the floor in my cubicle and some in my car. Monday I took my second tour of LAX and Noir, this time with all the soft furnishings in place. Wow. Pure Management Group really outdid themselves this time (see People Are Saying for a virtual tour of Noir). Tuesday it was back Downtown for the second block party concluding United's five-day event there. Wednesday night it was Lights Out for Light Nightclub, a final friends and family soiree which brought together all the people Light has, um, pleasured in its six year reign. Thursday afternoon I took a look at the nearly completed Blush Nightclub, I'd say about 99% done. While I watched, a whole team of mostly female designers put the finishing touches on the sexy space. Later that night, after enjoying the Shiny Toy Guns concert with over 2000 other fans poolside at Voodoo Beach, I headed down to Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce where Mr. Kane himself officially unleashed his Ivan Kane's Royal Jelly, which has been in previews for the past four weeks. What a show! Nowhere in Vegas can you get quite this close to a sweaty guitar player's crotch. And the dancers were pretty hot stuff as well. Friday night was given completely over to LAX, which opened just as planned, featuring the very familiar face of Britney Spears. She came, we saw, she left. Mission accomplished. Next! Saturday I dined with girlfriends Jade and Stacy at Wynn's Corsa before heading over to Blush for their second night on the scene. There we did a thorough check on all their signature cocktails; trust us, you won't be disappointed.
With my last ounces of energy, I did something Sunday night I haven't done in years: I cooked dinner. That's right, this former chef actually rolled up her frilly sleeves and got down and dirty with kitchen utensils that haven't seen the light of day since she lived in Ithaca, NY. For me, it was therapeutic and for one diner, I hear "It was delightful."
8/16 - 8/26 Thursday, August 16 I had the privilege of an exclusive first look at Trader Vic's at the Miracle Mile. The space, which features Vic's signature Tiki style restaurant, a casual patio facing the Bellagio fountain, and an upstairs ultralounge, will open the week before Planet Hollywood is officially opened on September 28 and 29. That Friday, I ventured into some new territory, stopping by Ovation at Green Valley Ranch to check out Rich & Famous who gave such a cute, pop-y performance you kinda wanted to bring 'em home and have them wake you up every morning with their rendition of "At the Carwash." Sure beats an alarm clock. Saturday night I got all dressed up (or rather, undressed) to attend Playboy's Midsummer Night's Dream party at the Palms Pool & Bungalows but a miscommunication with two girlfriends left me all undressed--and masked--in my car where I waited and read a magazine while the party raged on without me. When I finally gave up (and changed in my car for the second time that night), I headed to the Downtown Cocktail Room, my default bar of choice, to lick my wounds and show off my stripper shoes. The following Thursday I took a much needed respite from the Nightlife Issue to see my old friend Matt Miller perform at House of Blues. The rest of the world knows him as Matisyahu but back at White Plains High School, he was just Matt, the beat-boxing hippie kid. The performance was incredible with Matt--er, Matis, giving his fans one really dynamic show. One friend commented that he hadn't see the HOB that packed in a long time. White Plains: home of Matisyahu and Heineken. Oh, and The Circuit.
Friday, August 24 I braved the crush as Downtown's Fremont East was dedicated by a not-too-steady-on-his-feet Mayor Oscar Goodman. The party, which shut down Fremont for two blocks, encompassed The Griffin, DCR, and Beauty Bar as well as the lighting of the four new vintage signs. The sign-lighting was lovely enough, nostalgic, cute and all, but the party that ensued afterward at DCR was rather legendary, attended by local artists, writers, luminaries, comedians and even George Maloof who's been spending a lot of time Downtown recently. Hmmm, got a Palms North in the works George? Saturday night I worked way too late but stopped just in time for a late night study break at Hank's Steak & Martini at the Green Valley Ranch. Like me, you've probably walked past Hank's simple door many times without a glance but next time, I would recommend actually stopping in for a steak and, of course, a martini. The room is simply gorgeous and the service top notch. The fourth prelimimary round for the second annual Drop Dead Gorgeous Beauty Pageant at Beauty Bar went off without a hitch Sunday night, judged by Impact Models' Leanne Hildebrand, UltimateBarChef.com's Lisa Bigley, Jack Colton, the Playboy Club's Brandy Beavers, and local comedian Brandon Muller.
